Annex Art 30 Day Art and Writing Challenge April 2012
Day 4: Crackpot
So my original idea was to draw Doc Brown from “Back to the Future”, but that seemed a little too involved. So I racked my brains and came up with this. The words came later as I thought the man didn’t seem crazed enough. His facial expression came off as more maniacal. Thus the words.

Day 1: Magic!
I’m working on my drawing with the Wacom Bamboo tablet. I was having issues with another drawing and my lines so this was a great exercise to get out of that funk. I guess I was thinking “MAGICAL GIRL!”, so I went with that. Lots of layering and brush experimentation. I’d like to revisit this concept at some point.

Day 3: Numb
I had a flurry of ideas for this concept. I almost went with a girl stretched out on her bed probably doing drugs but went with this instead. I wanted to work on perspective and coloring with this one, going for more of a painterly touch. I’m a big fan of the smudge tool for this.

Sketch 5/13/12
Brief sketch of Delta, the second main character from the series I’m developing. Earlier versions have him looking younger than I’d like him to be but I think I’ve found the direction I want to take him. Trying to work with a much more pronounced cheekbone structure. Just a quick sketchy sketch! Found the marker like brush in Photoshop and I really like the effect.

Sketch 5/14/12
Nova from the story i’m working on. I’ve got quite a few drawings and sketches backed up so I’ll be updating daily for awhile. This was just a quick sketch drawn on my tablet with some brush experimentation in Photoshop. I’m trying to branch outside of the basic brushes to come up with a method I really like.

The New “aemcguire.com”

As most of you are aware, I’ve been rethinking the directions and mediums I want to take my art in. I know I’m thought of as a photographer, but I’ve felt my passion for it slipping away for a long time. I tried to hold on to it with the Keeping Film Alive project, but even that could not keep me tethered to the medium. I have come to terms with this and have rediscovered my other passions that I had put aside: Writing and Drawing.

I have always had a love of comic and graphic novel art work and feel a much stronger connection to that world. Maybe going to Comic Con was a wake up call, maybe the current story I’m working on has been strong enough to make me take action, or maybe I’ve decided to finally do the things I’ve always wanted to do. It could very well be all of the above but I am excited to be moving forward with this.

I will be launching my first graphic novel on the web on September 1st. I’ll make more detailed announcements later on the nature of this story and the link to it. I’ll be putting my concept drawings and other artwork up here on this blog.

I’m not saying I’m getting rid of my cameras… I just have figured out that I am not a photographer, I am an artist who likes to work in multiple mediums that include photography. I look forward to seeing where this road takes me and hope you’ll all follow me along the way!

Allons Sie!
